Each air-conditioned bungalow is of traditional Fijian design with sliding glass doors that open on to a patio overlooking the ocean. All garden view rooms include a refrigerator, en suite bathroom and small patio with daybed.

Beautiful location - a tropical paradise! . Staff and service were excellent. Amazing daily breakfast included in the price. We last visited Matamanoa in 2005, and it has retained its special charm in spite of the resort almost doubling in size. A key attraction was the snorkeling. Unfortunately the beautiful vibrant corals we saw in 2005 have been severely damaged by cyclones, but the snorkeling was still excellent and the coral is regenerating. We saw lots of tropical fish and turtles and reef sharks on a daily basis. The afternoon trip to Modriki island was awesome - lovely to spend some time on an uninhabited island and see where Castaway was filmed.

Resort is always pristine, but more care could be given to the beach. e.g. Removing chunks of construction concrete, daily picking up stuff that washes up on the tide - plastic etc. Very few vegetables were included in the dinner options-needed to be ordered as an 'extra' which made meals quite pricey.

This hotel has a great potential but the lack of maintenance, lack of garden give the feeling of a simple summer camp. Breakfast wasn’t great.

Overall amazing stay, avoid the spa

The island is absolutely amazing with the reef starting meters from the shore. It's super peaceful and beautiful, very relaxing. Nice pool. Good complimentary breakfast. Friendly bar staff. The rooms were kept exceptionally clean and were nice! The diving excursion was amazing and all dive staff very safe and friendly. The entertainment is also amazing, including a staff member chopping fresh coconuts off the tree and handing them out at the pool...sooo good!

The spa service was very bad. They offered a free ten minute foot massage. I booked in for this and another 30 minute body massage. They messed up the timings and ended up combining and rushing both into 25 minutes from what should have been a 40 minute treatment. My partner was surprised when I returned to the pool so quickly. I reported it to reception immediately to demonstrate that I should have still been in the massage and they weren't very apologetic and made me feel like I was in the wrong. The spa is also quite overpriced given the quality of the facilities and I left feeling very ripped off. The food in the evenings is good but nothing special for the price and the pool lounger cushions are old and torn.

Wonderful

Staff members went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay, service was personalized. Beautiful views of the ocean from the infinity pool.

The food was greatly overpriced and could be improved. The hotel could consider offering a bigger selection of bar snacks - only food options outside of meal times were potato wedges and fries. There were many mosquitos around the property - though I don't think this was the property's fault. Could have a greater selection of free activities. We did participate in hat and basket weaving and enjoyed ourselves.

Wonderful

The location of the resort is an absolute dream. It constantly felt like we had the beautiful white sandy beach and the turquoise water to ourselves. My partner and I stayed in the pool villa on the other side of the island and the views were to die for. The villa was beautiful and clean and the beach in front was always empty. The food was really good, especially considering that you are on a little island in the middle of the pacific. The diving and snorkelling (even of the beach) was great. Staff was very friendly and helpful. My dad got sick during our stay and the ladies at the reception even helped arrange a pick up of medication on the main island. All in all, highly recommend this resort for a couples or family vacation!

- the wait at the restaurant can be long, but it didn't really bother us unless we had a morning activity to get to right after breakfast. - for some reason there is a lot of flies at the resort but probably not in their control

Picture perfect paradise

The room was great. We stayed in a beach front villa and the shower was great, the bed was comfortable and the overall amenity was excellent. The island itself is gorgeous and every day was incredibly photogenic. The free use of kayaks and snorkeling gear is very handy as the surrounding waters are excellent to kayak over and the coral reef is a lot of fun to explore while snorkelling. The quality of the food is fantastic and tasted great. The staff are very talented. They seem to have a hand in everything from restaurant service, luggage handling, singing and beyond. The Matamanoa bird was a privilege to see and hear. Definitely a highlight of the island.

The diversity of food options is lacking, particularly for vegetarians. We stayed for 9 nights and were pretty tired of the food by day 6. To be clear, the quality of ingredients and taste of the food was exceptional, but lacking choice. The mirrors throughout the villa and the door glass - overlooking the ocean - were very dirty. I spent a decent amount of time cleaning the glass and it made such a difference.

Pretty much everything bar a few small things. Such an amazing resort and island! Fifi is a legend!

Shampoo etc was not replenished daily. Snorkel guides need to advise guests not to dive to turtles as they get scared and swim off ruining it for everyone. People should not be allowed to bring giant inflatables to the pool as it ruins the atmosphere.

We enjoyed the restful beauty of the island. thank you!

The meals on the terrace were fine. The room was comfortable, and we enjoyed the dipping pool in the heat of the day. The sea is lovely, and the snorkeling was a delight.

We had a very quick kayak around the island, but it was difficult to time an outing with the tides and hours the water sports station is open. Paddle boards would be a fabulous addition, especially as they can be used at low tide when the kayaks can't.

An idyllic island and very comfortable stay. Stayed with my husband and 17 year old son in ocean front bungalow. Felt like we had our bit of paradise. Very quiet. Staff so friendly - they welcome and say goodbye to every couple with music and song. Wonderful. Lovely small resort. Food fine. Drinks and food cheaper than at Interncontinental where we also stayed. Would highly recommend if you want to get away from it all in small, very friendly, idyllic environment. Husband and son liked the tennis court. Hermit crab racing great fun because of the staff. Bed super comfy.

Couldn't fault it really except plunge pool a bit small and no mats or water baths to wash feet coming in to the room from outside. Snorkelling perhaps not as good as hoped as quite strong current but did see turtle, ray and shark. Bities in the water too! Think they're upgrading a few features but liked the slight lack of 'polish'! Cost of ferry was higher than anticipated.

Extremely welcoming resort, the staff were exceptional, our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, the beach is pristine white with lots of reef and colorful fish! Great for snorkeling and kayaking. Last but not least the climb to the highest peek of the island boasts spectacular views and position to watch the sunset. Highly recommend.

The island atmosphere was all you can hope for. I happily did nothing for 4 days and enjoyed every second of it.

The food wasn't anything special, and the service was terribly slow or in some cases forgetful. (I often had to remind several staff members that I had placed a drink order. And on my last night, despite several requests, I never received any bread at dinner. Though the table next to me got seconds.)
